Practical Pharmacology in Rehabilitation: Effect of Medication on Therapy takes an interdisciplinary look at the effects of medications on recovering patients and assists rehabilitation professionals in designing patient-specific therapy plans.
The aim of the book is to integrate pharmacology into clinical practice in a practical manner that helps the rehabilitation therapist or specialist design a patient-specific therapy plan based on each patient's coexisting disease states and medication therapies.
This book is best for students and for professionals in practicing rehabilitation.
The book is composed of 6 parts including 24 chapters. Additionally, there is an Appendix about "Medications Delivered by Iontophoresis and Phonophoresis", a glossary, references and and an index at the end of the book. Part I is "Foundations" including the following chapter headings; 1-"Introduction to Medication Monitoring by the Rehabilitation Therapist", 2-"Medication's Effects on the Nervous System, Muscle Function, and Cognition", 3-"Nutrition in the Rehabilitation Patent". Part II contains 4 chapters addressing medications used to treat "Depression and Bipolar Disorders", "Psychosis and Schizophrenia", "Delirium, Dementia, and Alzheimer's disease", and "Anxiety, Anxiety Disorders, and Insomnia". Part III, "Medications Used to Treat Neurologic and Movement Disorders", lists 5 chapters about the medications used to treat "Seizure Disorders", "Spasticity and Muscle Spasm", "Parkinson's Disease", Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis, Multiple Sclerosis, and Myasthenia Gravis", and "Other Movement Disorders". There are 3 chapters in Part IV subjected medications used to treat "Pain", "Chronic Pain Syndromes", and "Substance-Use Disorders". Part V comprises of 3 chapters those are about medications used to treat "Infections", Osteoarthritis, Gout, and Rheumatoid Arthritis", and "Cancer". Finally, Part VI with the heading "Medications Used to Treat Chronic Disease" includes 6 chapters about medications used to treat "Hypertension, Congestive Heart Failure, and Cardiac Arrhythmias", "Peripheral Artery Disease, Stroke, and Coronary Heart Disease", "Diabetes", "Respiratory Disease", Thyroid Disease, Parathyroid Disease, and Osteoporosis", and "Gastrointestinal Disorders".
The book is written by a clinical pharmacist, a speech-language pathologist, and a physical therapist and athletic trainer those are highly knowledgeable authors in their area. It explains the necessary pharmacology and then focuses on the relationship between medications and the rehabilitation process. Throughout the text more than 100 easy-to-use tables provide quick access to information, including potential side effects affecting rehabilitation for common medications used in treatment for many conditions and other possible side effects or considerations.
